About Code for Canada

Code for Canada is a national non-profit that enables governments to deliver better digital services and empowers communities to solve civic challenges. We connect residents, government innovators and civic technologists, so they can work together to build a better nation.

As part of our mission, we form cross-functional product teams composed of product managers, UX designers and developers and embed them on government projects. Not only are these teams helping build products and services, but the team is also tasked with building digital capacity among government partners.

What you’ll do

You’ll be part of a small cross-functional team (one developer, one designer, and one Product Manager) to build a digital product that addresses a public service need.

As a team, you’ll be responsible for all aspects of the product development process. You will coordinate closely with internal IT teams to ensure that the product is well-positioned for long-term sustainment after the completion of your contract.

You’ll work shoulder to shoulder with public servants who are subject matter experts, learning from them about their domain and helping them understand the approaches, tools, and processes of digital teams.

The details

  • Job type: full-time, fixed-term; terms of engagement can vary based on the project.
  • Target start date: TBC- Candidates must pass the government security clearance process before confirming the start date. The process can take over ten weeks. 
  • Salary range: Will vary based on skillset 
  • Location: anywhere in Canada
  • Note: Although a remote position, some partner requires proof of vaccination against COVID-19.

Whom we’re looking for

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Taking ownership from conception and design to coding and deployment
  • Work with the team to develop web applications 
  • Review, test, and enhance existing features
  • Test and document your solutions
  • Develop architecture and implementation plans alongside the Code for Canada and Partner’s teams.
  • Ensure development targets are met on time
  • Produce high-quality, well-tested, and user-friendly software
  • Being an active participant across the complete design/develop/test/build/release/maintain web application lifecycle
  • Knowledgeable and experience debugging (using appropriate tools and techniques)
  • Build high-performing, resilient, scalable software with an emphasis on code quality through the unit and integration testing
  • Helping to define the infrastructure on which your code runs and support it in production

Qualifications:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of your stack
  • Comprehensive knowledge of web development technologies
  • Experience developing web application backends using Flask, Django, Rails, Express, or an equivalent framework
  • Experience using software development tools and methods (source control, unit testing, bug tracking, continuous integration, etc.)

Preferred but not required

  • Additional experience in digital delivery roles outside of the skillset through which you are applying
  • Experience mentoring or teaching people without technical experience
  • Community organizing, non-profit, government, and policy experience
  • Professional fluency in French
